If you’re wanting a an overnight success as a blogger then you’ll be running in circles. For your blog to do well, some things need to be implemented.
The success of your blog depends on the value that you give them. The more your site is able to make your readers/customers lives easier or help them make money, the more your blog will be valuable to them. It means not just telling your readers why they should read your blog but how using your blog can actually help them. Your site must have enough information for the visitors to make a decision and take the action you want them to take. Basically, you will only succeed if you give readers something that they want.
I think this is where contests come into play. Regardless of whether your entering or holding one, this provides traffic, links, & prizes. If you enter a contest, you will get traffic, a link, and possibly some winnings. If you hold a contest, you will get traffic and links. Everyone wins.
A couple of things that can be done to improve the blogger to reader relationship is to setup a contact page and FAQ’s page. Make sure to reply to questions & concerns ASAP. This will tell the reader (or potential customer) that you care. There’s nothing worse than asking a question and never getting a reply. The FAQ’s page will be very helpful in answering all those basic but often asked questions.
Readers love it when you deliver way more than their expectations. There is a lot of hype out there where they say they can make people rich or guarantee results. While these kind of sites may draw people in, they will also let people down. Be honest with your readers and then provide them a freebie of sorts. This could be an ebook, special email, or recognition of them or their blog.
Of course a well-written and eye appealing blog will have a positive impression on your readers, but your ultimate goal is to get the reader to take the action you want. Try to have your top posts, subscribe options, and sponsors towards the top of the page. The obvious tabs will help a great deal. These are easy to read and navigate. Make sure your font is readible. Try to refrain from too many widgets or definately refrain from using flashy banners/ads.
You should really try to find blogs in your niche that you can team up with. What I mean by this is, perhaps swapping a banner ad or promote an article written by that partner and them have them do the same for you. There are an array of ways to promote and this one is worth considering. This also can mean to buy advertising on the “right” sites. The more creative you are, the better your chances will be in receiving quality traffic.
Ebay, McDonalds, and Coca-Cola all have strong brands. Effective online branding does not require big budgets, just an understanding of what brand attributes you are trying to build. Think about your site, yourself, your niche and come up with a logo perhaps that will set you apart. By doing this, you will increase the depth and stickiness of your reader/customer relationships.

I definitely agree with the two first comments. A lot (too many ?) bloggers have no patience and don’t offert a single thing… It’s too bad.
Have I invited you over at the Bloggeries forum already ? I’m a mod there, but I think we would all benefit from your advice ! You should come over sometimes… ;-) (No, I don’t get pay for that message !
