Building a List Marketing Tip

Critiqued by Cowboytf | January 25, 2008 .

A really good way to market your blog/website or product is through a list.  One particular method is email marketing.  This method has somewhat become unpopular because of spammers but if done right, can be VERY effective!  Obviously to be successful with email marketing, you will need a list.  Some people prefer to buy consumer lists for convenience but you probably already have a list and don’t even realize it.

3 places to get your free list:

  1. Feedburner email subscribers.  Very easy to find and regardless if you have 1 or 100, it’s the start of a list.
  2. Post subscribers.  In your WP dashboard, look under manage/subscriptions and you will see the people who have subscribed to a certain post or to comments.  You will also find their email to add to your list.
  3. Commentators.  Every person that leaves a comment is usually required to leave their email also.  This is a great way to contact a particular person and a way to build your list.

Now, I’m not saying for you to abuse the situation but chances are, if they are regular subscribers and/or commenters on your blog, then they probably won’t mind getting an email from you every now and then.  When you send out your first email, you can include a way for them to unsubscribe if they prefer not to get the email.

Why do you need a list?

To promote your blog and/or services of course!  This can also be a great money maker if you aren’t too spammy.  Say you have a food blog.  Some brand new cookware is out and you want to share the news.  You can send an email out all about the brand new line and when you link to the product, use your affiliate link.  OR, you can just announce the line and encourage them to check out your blog and read all about it.

Say you want to start a monthly newsletter about your “blogging tips” site.  Every month, you would compile some posts with your affiliate links and be sure to include information that isn’t found on your blog.  That will encourage your readers/potential customers to want to stay subscribed.  Once your newsletter is done, you simply send it out to everyone on your email list that you built yourself.

So get your list started and when you’re ready to go to the next level, get to marketing your blog, website, or product!
