5 Things You Shouldn’t Blog About

Critiqued by Cowboytf | February 11, 2008 .

If you’re a serious blogger trying to earn respect and gain readership in the marketing/make money online niche, then there are some topics that you should stay away from.

Insurance

Mesothelioma

Personal Issues

Gambling

Religion

I think insurance, mortgages, and mesothelioma speak for themselves.  They are simple off the blog topic completely and belong on personal blogs or blog that are geared towards that specific niche

Personal issues get a mixed reaction.  There are times when readers like to see a more personal side to the blogger, however, they don’t want to read about what TV show you watched last night and whether or not you stayed up too late on a daily basis.  They are here for one reason and that is to learn.

Religion belongs on a personal blog as well.  Unless you are just wanting to create controversy, then you should avoid this subject all-together.  There are way too many opinions on this very deep issue and it will end up turning your blog into a Jerry Springer show.  While I’m all for stirring things up a bit, I am completely against amateur acts where bloggers end up calling each other names.

Are there subjects that you wouldn’t touch with a 10-ft pole on your blog?

I won’t blog about toe fungus. That’s about it.

Ok, maybe I would, but I haven’t yet.

My last post was about 5 Things You Can’t Do at Zombo.com, but it was a boredom post.

Boredom posts can be stupid. I make stupid blog posts because that’s my niche. Sort of.

Great points. That is the reason I created a religion blog as well so I didn’t make posts about God on my main blog.

I’m guilty, too. Oh well…my niche has become dollhouses, but it’s such a tight one that I am not sure I will ever get advertisers for it.

    That’s the idea :)

Of course after much thought, I need to revise and rewrite that post…and actually make it readable.

I think the greatest topics that will attract many visitors is about artist…Just too bad that I’m not good enough to get hot gossip before anybody does.

You make some good points here. And I think I’ve broken too many of the rules, having spent the last few week publishing personal emails between myself and a pretty Russian girl.

However, I disagree with your ban on gambling blogs. There is a big Poker Blogger community of which I’m an occasional participant. Some of my poker blogger friends play a regular tournament. And last year I even went up to Scotland to visit some of them. Blogs that have helped to create genuine friendships are definitely worthwhile in my view.

P.S. If I forgot to click the “notify me” on my previous comment, how can I turn it back on?
