This post is for you wanna-be bloggers. It’s easy to get started so quit procrastinating and just do it!
You can start your very own blog in as little as 3 easy steps. There are a number of popular sites that let you create and host your own blog at no charge. What’s even better is that creating your blog is fast and simple. I suppose this is why blogging has become some popular.
1: Choose a Topic
One of the most important things you can do is to determine the niche of your blog that you will be writing about. For example, people who want to blog, do so for the purpose of sharing ways to help others. Some are looking for an outlet to make posts on just about anything-or what is commonly known as a journal. A huge number of people are wanting to make money from their blogs.
Regardless of the purpose you choose, select a topic that you enjoy and can contribute to on a regular basis. Many times you will think of ideas for your next post based on the comments you receive. This is one of the best ways to develop new content that is relevant to your readers.
2: Select a Blog Provider
There are a number of websites that offer free blogs. However, the two largest and easiest to use are Blogger and WordPress.com. These sites have millions of users and have been offering free blogs for some time. The benefit of using a couple like these two blogging hosts is the reliability and user friendly dashboards. I used Blogger when I first started out and was very happy with it. It’s very easy to use - even for someone like me. I have now moved to my own host (Bluehost) and am VERY happy I did. It was worth the extra money. There are far more benefits to having your own host that with a free host, however, if you are a newbie you should probably start out free!
3: Launch Your Blog
If you’re choosing Blogger to launch your blog, all you do is simply create an account, name your blog, and choose a template. From there, you can begin posting to your blog immediately. Many of the blog providers, like Blogger give you the ability to choose from a number of blog templates. Advanced users can design their own blog template. I recommend Amanda’s templates over at Blogger Buster for some awesome blogger templates.
Wordpress, another blogging tool is also very simple to use. After creating a username and entering your email address, you create a blog name and title. You’ll receive a confirmation email that provides instructions on how to begin.
Once you’ve launched your blog and made a number of posts, you should really focus on generating traffic. Not only will the traffic support any online business you may be supporting, but it can also improve the overall quality of your weblog. Keep in mind, you posts must be of quality or else it will be worthless to generate traffic because they’ll just want to leave. Content is KING!!
Some simple tips for generating traffic to your blog include:
One thing you’ll find about starting you own blog is that blogging is both simple and fun. It’s when you go into making money with it is when it gets a bit more complicated. As you develop a loyal readership, you’ll find blogging to be a great learning experience as well. With that said, there no reason why you shouldn’t start blogging today.

Good advice for those just starting to blog.
How easy is it to get a new blog listed somewhere like dmoz? From past and experience, and what I’ve read on forums, it seems very hard.
Any tips on how I can improve my success rate would be appreciated.

It’s actually quite hard to get listed at DMOZ but it’s worth it to keep trying. Everywhere else is fairly simple.
Tips on improving your success rate regarding?…
I was hoping for tips on increasing my success rate on directory approvals. The directories that I’ve been approved for in the past have been of such low quality that it wasn’t the effort.
Most of my link building in the past has been via friends and the DP COOP network. However, the DP COOPY network doesn’t work too well anymore, and my friends mostly have Poker Blogs, which are a niche I’m trying to expand away from.

Very simplified, I like this article. It is unfortunate that blogging is so much harder than it sounds with maintenence and the need to turn out new material week after week…. but getting on your way is really just a matter of determination :)

I think finding our niche is the most difficult part. Do you have any tip for this?
Beatrice, most people recommend choosing something that interests you. But that can be hard enough in itself. I love cooking, but don’t think there’s much scope for making cash out of cooking tips. Especially if the writer is no good at it!

Beatrice, I’ve wrote a couple of other posts about this that may interest you.
