Do Product Reviews? Get Organized!

Critiqued by Cowboytf | August 7, 2008 .

I have review blog that rocks and currently has a contest for a Zivio Bluetooth Wireless Headset;)  Okay, okay….back to the subject at hand.  I do lots of reviews on ALL my blogs so sometimes keeping track of everything can get a bit overwhelming to say the least.  It’s very easy to forget what days you received the products, managing the paperwork that goes with them, and even the emails you received about the product, website, or service.

This is what I do.  I have this tall shelf where I added the labels Monday through Friday.  When I get a product, I simply place in on the shelf of the day I received it.  Then, I go to my handy dandy notebook (oh my gosh, did I just say that??? Freakin’ Blues Clues!) and put it there.

How do I put it there?  Well, lemme just tell you;)

You can use a spiral notebook or binder or whatever you want, paper clips, and a writing tool.

Use one sheet of paper per review.  Whatever you’re reviewing, put it down as the title.  Write down the date you received the product or when the post is due and the blog it’s supposed to be published on.  Now use a paper clip and attach any paperwork you got with the product (if that’s the case) and p-clip it.  When you go to do your product review and you are testing the product, jot down the pros and cons on that same peice of paper in your notebook for reference when it’s time to do your review.

If it’s a website review, create a folder in your inbox and store all review emails there.  You can even go as far as creating subfolders for product reviews, website, and service reviews if you want.

That is a great idea, I’ve never even thought of doing something like that before. I don’t do as many product reviews as I would like, but I love doing them and it seems that if someone does an insane amount of reviews, as you said you do, that this is a truly great idea.

While I don’t mind keep a few piles of books or DVDs by my desk, having shampoo, cleaning products, etc. around would drive me crazy. (And what do you do if the review product has to be refrigerated?) So I like to use calendars in Outlook. I have one for family stuff and another for blogging/writing assignments. I can also color code different things, like purple for paid reviews, red for guest posts due, or whatever. If you don’t have Outlook, Google calendar works well, too.

I haven’t seen a blog post related to this topic before. Great ideas on getting organized! Any tips on how to get companies to send you products to review?

Thanks for the tip! I am getting to the point where I’m having difficulty keeping everything organized. I’ll have to get my own little shelf. Right now everything is throw in together in a huge box by my computer. Your idea is soo much better.. and easier on the eyes. Can you imagine coming in my house to see a big bulky box sititng right there!? :)

I created an Excel Spreadsheet for mine very similar to yours, but I probably will start keeping a notebook now that you mentioned it ~ good idea in the event of (knock wood) a crash
